What a Factory Fire Taught Me About Business

I was at dance practice when I started getting calls from my dad. I did not know why he was calling, but I could tell something was wrong. My family’s factory had caught fire.

My parents immediately returned to the factory. They stayed through the night and came back before sunrise. What stayed with me was not only the damage, but what happened afterward. My parents focused on their employees and started thinking about how to rebuild. Even after everything that happened, many employees stayed.

Before that night, I thought business was mostly about numbers: sales, expenses, and profit. I grew up hearing my parents talk about these things at the dinner table, so I naturally thought of business that way.

But the fire changed how I saw it.

I realized that a business is also built on people. The employees who stayed were not just workers. They were people who trusted my parents and believed in the company enough to rebuild with them.

That experience changed the way I think about leadership. A leader is not only someone who makes decisions when things are going well. It is also someone who stays, takes responsibility, and helps others move forward when things go wrong.

I still care about the numbers. But now, when I think about business, I also think about the people behind them.
