Behind My Choreography

Behind My Choreography

For me, choreography is more than putting movements together. It is about turning an idea, emotion, or story into something people can feel without hearing a single word.

When I create a piece, I usually start with a question: What do I want the audience to feel? From there, I explore the music, movements, formations, and transitions that can communicate that feeling. Sometimes a simple movement can say more than a complicated one.

My Vietnamese background also plays an important role in my choreography. Incorporating elements such as the nón lá, traditional gestures, and Vietnamese-inspired movements allows me to share a part of my culture through a language I love which is dance. At the same time, I enjoy experimenting with contemporary movements and different styles to create something that feels personal to me.

Choreographing has taught me that creativity does not always happen perfectly on the first try. Some movements look better in my head than they do on the floor. Some ideas need to be changed completely. I have learned to watch, adjust, repeat, and sometimes let go of an idea when it no longer serves the story.

The most rewarding moment is seeing everything come together on stage. A movement that started as a small idea can become a story shared with an entire audience.

That is what choreography means to me: turning imagination into movement, and movement into a story.
