From Admiration to Leadership: My Journey into Prefect leader team

From Admiration to Leadership: My Journey into Prefect leader team

When I first arrived in the United States, everything felt new from different people, different cultures, to a completely unfamiliar environment. As a freshman, I often looked up to the student leaders in residential life. They seemed confident, friendly, and genuinely caring. What stood out to me most was how they connected with others so naturally supporting students, communicating with parents, and creating a welcoming community in the dorms.

At the time, I quietly hoped that one day I could become like them.

Applying for this role was not easy. It required effort, persistence, and stepping out of my comfort zone. As an international student, I had to build my confidence in communication and learn how to connect with people from many different backgrounds. But through every challenge, I reminded myself why I started: I wanted to make a difference in people’s daily lives.

On March 27, 2026, I opened my email and found out that I had been selected. It was a moment of gratitude and pride, not just because I achieved a goal but because of how much I had grown along the way.

For me, this role is more than just leadership. It’s about building a community where people feel seen, supported, and valued. I enjoy talking to others, learning about different cultures, and creating meaningful connections. I believe that even small actions like a simple conversation or a genuine smile can make someone’s day better. I also want to support students who may be struggling with language barriers or academics when they first arrive, just like I once did.

As I step into this position, I hope to create a positive and inclusive environment where every student feels at home. This journey, from admiration to becoming a role model myself, reminds me that growth is possible when we challenge ourselves and stay true to our purpose.

And sometimes, it all starts with a smile.
